In reconstructing the changes in global mean temperature since 1850, Berkeley Earth has examined 20 million monthly-average temperature observations from 48,000 weather stations. Locations with new records for annual average temperature are also indicated. For the ocean surface, we find that 2019 nominally ranks as the 3rd warmest year. The weather station data is combined with sea surface temperature data from the UK Met Office’s Hadley Centre (HadSST). The anomaly map on the left is a product of a merged land surface temperature (Global Historical Climatology Network, GHCN) and sea surface temperature (ERSST.v4) anomaly analysis as described in Huang et al. London 37 °F Light rain. “This heat wave is exceptional by its intensity and how early it is,” the prime minister, Edouard Philippe, said, defending authorities’ efforts to avoid a repeat of the notorious 2003 heatwave which caused 15,000 premature deaths. Data provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), showed global average temperatures for June 2019 were the highest on record for the month. In addition, it was also the warmest year thus far observed in Antarctica. In the atmosphere, 500-millibar height pressure anomalies correlate well with temperatures at the Earth's surface. The temperature uncertainties can be visualized using the schematic below where each year’s temperature estimate is represented by a distribution reflecting its uncertainty. If the Paris Agreement’s goal of no more than 2 °C (3.6 °F) warming is to be reached, significant progress towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions needs to be made soon. Tokyo 48 °F Cool. The deluge delivered in the US by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 was made three times more likely by climate change. Natural variability would cause some extreme weather, even without global heating, but our impacts on the climate make such extremes more likely. The following chart shows a ten- year moving average of the Earth’s surface temperature, plotted relative to the average temperature from 1850-1900. close. At 50.8 degrees Celsius, Churu logs highest-ever temperature in Rajasthan. The slight disagreement in the ranking reflects both the uncertainty in these estimations and the differences in how various research programs look at the Earth. Has that sunk in? The following map qualitatively categorizes local temperatures in 2019 based on how different they were from historical averages after accounting for the typical climate variability at each location. The total uncertainty is much less than the long-term changes in climate during the last 150 years. Temperature anomalies for land and ocean are analyzed separately and then merged to form the global analysis. Since 1980, the overall trend is +0.19 °C/decade (+0.34 °F/decade) and has changed little during this period. Internal weather variability, such as El Niño and La Niña, generate year-to-year variations in temperature that occur in addition to the long-term warming trend.
